opera divertimento

Yesterday’s win was the final act of the opera. Our heroes were victorious at long last, after seven months of tension and madness, as they finally overcame a legacy of tragedy that had plagued the city until last night. It was a season of faith’s perfection, and the players looked at each other with elation as they rushed the field: they were the scribes of their own marvelous libretto.

And for those of us who were fortunate enough to witness it all, when we tell others of where we were, how we saw it, and who we were with, we’ll always remember that ride of emotional wavelengths that bonded together Giants fans all around the world. The spectrum of emotions was astonishing: we laughed at their antics, we screamed with amazement, and finally, we cried, lachrymose with joy. We’re connected by that experience, and forever changed.

All is changed, changed utterly.

So what happens now?

Red Sox fans were notorious for losing enthusiasm after their team won the championship. For us, we, too, are finally able to feel the cathartic release that cleansed decades of turmoil. But, what makes this particular victory special in the baseball world is that the Giants reinvented the schematic for conquest, and truth be told, it was a variation on a theme we’ve seen before: teamwork. Not one of these guys stood out as a high-class superstar, and their ability to set their egos aside and pool their collective talents was remarkable; these “outcasts” and “misfits” are now World Champions.

The revolution against the East Coast elite has just begun.
